Clearance Inspections

What are Clearance Inspections?

A clearance inspection is an inspection undertaken upon completion of asbestos removal works to ensure that the former asbestos removal work area and surrounding area is free from visible asbestos contamination. If clearance air monitoring was undertaken as part of the inspection then the concentration of airborne asbestos fibres must be below 0.01 fibres/mL of air.

When is a Clearance Inspection required?

A visual clearance inspection is required upon completion of non-friable asbestos removal works where 10m2 or more asbestos containing materials (ACM) were removed.

A visual and air monitoring clearance is required to be undertaken by a licenced asbestos assessor where friable asbestos removal work has been undertaken. Air monitoring must be undertaken as part of the clearance inspection and the concentration of airborne asbestos fibres must be below 0.01 fibres/mL of air.

Who ensures a Clearance Inspection is undertaken?

For asbestos removal works undertaken at a workplace the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) who commissions the asbestos removal work must ensure that a clearance inspection is undertaken. The PCBU must ensure that a clearance certificate is issued in writing before the workplace can be reoccupied.

For asbestos removal work undertaken at a residential premises the licenced asbestos removalist must ensure a clearance inspection is undertaken.
